Germany (BattDG): OfH is now mandatory

As of 15 January 2026, battery producers placing batteries on the German market must be connected to an approved Organisation für Herstellerverantwortung (OfH) and must have completed the required updates in the EAR portal. If not, registrations may be treated as invalid, which can impact sales/distribution in Germany.
Quick check: does this apply to you?
Review this if you sell in Germany:
- standalone batteries, or
- products with embedded batteries (electronics, tools, e-bikes, devices), or
- via distance selling / marketplaces.
What you should do now
1) Check your EAR status
Log into the EAR portal and verify your battery registrations are still active across all relevant legal entities/brands.
2) Confirm OfH coverage (per category)
Make sure an OfH is assigned for every battery category you place on the market – and that the OfH is approved for those categories.
3) Verify the required data fields
Don’t stop at OfH: check that mandatory portal information is complete (commonly: tax-related identifiers and battery chemistry/composition fields).
4) Save basic proof
Keep the OfH confirmation + a simple internal SKU-to-category overview. This helps with marketplaces, distributors, and audits.
What usually causes issues
- OfH only assigned for some categories
- missing mandatory portal fields
- multiple portal accounts / wrong legal entity / outdated details
How Viron can help
